In 2008, high on the fumes of a New Rave hangover, Neon Neon (a Super Furry Animals side-project inspired by the life and wives of engineer-playboy John DeLorean) released 'Michael Douglas': a song all about finding 'perfection in Michael Douglas' mirrored sunglasses'.

Well, consider it an omen. For 11 years later, we did see perfection, and we saw it in Michael Douglas' shades.

At the 59th Monte Carlo TV Festival, the 74-year-old aced summer with one pair of mighty sunglasses. They're more classic than the current appetite for pitch black peepers plucked from The Matrix. They're not just simple black-framed Wayfarers, either. These shades are perfect - and they're better than yours or ours.

It's simple. By opting for a translucent, plastic frame, Douglas takes a tried-and-tested shape into fairly modern waters. The 2019 update of the shades Gordon Gecko probably wore after adding another billion to his personal portfolio, if you will.

And he looks good. One simple pair of shades and Douglas has been transformed. He's cool. He's your dad's friend who lives abroad, who never shows any sign of inebriation despite burning through three bottles of very expensive Grüner Veltliner in record time. He's got a boat. He's got a wife with lovely hair. And, most importantly, he's got a very strong pair of summer sunglasses.
