The Met Gala is no place for wallflowers. It's go hard, or go home. Or in this year's theme, go high camp, owing to a dress code based upon a landmark essay by Susan Sontag. Which is exactly what Benedict Cumberbatch did.
After a strong performance on the Avengers: Endgame campaign trail, the 42-year-old continued on the up, pairing bespoke Labassa Woolfe for one unique look. Imagine Jay Gatsby on a cruise inbound to Miami soundtracked by an unadulterated Cubana club banger from 1943 and you're almost there.
Serving a viral moment in 2019 is no easy task either. For every moment of statement, there's a Harry Styles or Ezra Miller ready and waiting in the wings, guaranteed to steal your thunder with one swish of a boundary-breaking, designer-made outfit.
And yet Cumberbatch held his own. Better yet, the actor cut to the fore without looking too try hard: the inimitable party guest that jumps on the left-field dress code with both feet but without looking at all embarrassed about it. Fortune (and fine 'fits) favour the bold.
What's arguably most impressive though, is Cumberbatch's ability to outshine the majority of the guest list. As a man that's consistently stylish, Dr. Strange isn't quite as well-known for headline-grabbing left-fieldism. That may well be changing though. And if that's the case, we'll have Cumberbatch on every invite list with a +1 slot till the End Of Days.
