Finding a suit for under £300 is easy. Finding one that doesn't reflect light like a disco-ball and crimp across every centimetre of your body? Far less so.
Everyone deserves the self-assurance that comes with wearing a nice suit, whatever their budget. But wading through hundreds of ill-fitting, thigh-hugging fire hazards can get dispiriting pretty quickly, and it's easy to settle for something that leaves you feeling uncomfortable and unconfident.
Still, there's hope. Plenty of brands have perfected the art of affordable tailoring. Namely, menswear labels like Cos, Reiss and Arket, who care about the craftsmanship of their suits and understand perfectly how they should fit.
To help you out, we've rounded up six of the best suits on the market that you can buy on a budget.
Kermit says it isn’t easy being green, but that frog’s a damn fool. As any man with a verdant wardrobe will tell you, green looks great – but you need to invest in the right pieces, preferably in a darker shade. This wool hopsack, semi-constructed suit from Swedish brand Arket will help you stand out from the classic crowd without veering too far into look-at-meeeee! territory.

Oh, didn't you hear? We're all dressing like business goths now. From Keanu Reeves to Robert Pattinson, black-on-black is ruling the red carpets. And menswear heads know that, when it comes to no-nonsense tailoring, M&S can be trusted. Avoid the Reservoir Dogs comparisons with a black shirt, tie, and shoe combo. Avoid churches, too.
Much-loved Scandi brand A Day's March is all about the well-made essentials that every man needs in their life, and believe us when we say: you need some deconstructed, workwear-inspired tailoring. This three-button twill number is smart enough to wear to work, and casual enough to combine with other items in your wardrobe.
Reiss has established itself as a go-to for well-made suits at an affordable price, but you'll generally have to wait for the sales to find a sub-£300 bargain on the rails. But we found one! (albeit in low-stock, so get in there quick). The summer's long gone, but that doesn't mean you can't still dabble in some light, Mediterranean tailoring (and while you're there, have a root around the site's 'Outlet' section for more cut-price suits).
It's too easy to blend in with the crowd wearing a blue suit, so the small details are important. This lightweight piece from Cos (available only online) has a tonal melange wool-mix that we're big fans of, which helps lift it from 'office wear' to 'where is your office? I want to go there and stare at your suit some more.'
Don’t let Jacob Rees-Mogg et al stop you from investing in a double-breasted suit. You’ll look miles better, and not just because you’ll buy one that actually fits. This slim two-piece also comes in a brown corduroy, just in time for the Seventies style revival.
