Eddie Redmayne is more British than a bottle of Pimm's devoured by a sunburnt toff on a mild Wimbledon afternoon.

But he's not just confined to Britishness. Oh no - the 36-year-old can do French classic just as well.

What's more, he knows how to give it a refresh. At a CinemaCon presentation in Las Vegas, The Danish Girl took the Breton stripe - long a fail-safe style move - and rejigged the formula, thanks to a simple snake motif à la Gucci to the sleeve.

This one small detail adds both colour and impact to what could be a relatively dull look. To replicate, keep your point of difference simple (be it a snake, or something simpler, like a collar detail or embroidery), then anchor and layer with quieter staples elsewhere. Feel free to experiment with the stripe colour, too.

Striped Cashmere Knit Sweater by Gucci, £880

Don't confuse all that as a diss to the classic Breton, either. A well-deployed horizontal stripe can add bulk to skinnier frames by drawing the eye from side-to-side. Handy - especially when you've swapped your gym membership fee for a brand new designer jumper.
