For its latest autumn/winter collection, legendary outdoors gear brand Patagonia went back to the drawing board – of, er, 1973.

The rugged label – based in fact in California, not in the near-mythical South American wilderness of the same name – turns 40 this year. To celebrate, the modern-day design team has come up with a collection inspired by adventurer and company founder Yvon Chouinard’s most iconic original pieces.

The Legacy Collection takes those early lines and updates them with cutting-edge materials (although the designers make the point of keeping the logos as retro-looking as possible).

"It’s good to be at a place where the past is so rich and full of amazing stories, experiences and people," collection designer Claire Chouinard, Yvon’s daughter, says. "Then at the same time we have a really cool environment for [exploring] what’s coming, where we can go to."

Here’s our edit of the collection, available at Patagonia’s flagship London store.
