The mysteries of the world aren't hidden in the pyramids, or locked within Tilda Swinton's dream diary. Oh no. They're inside George Clooney: a man that, through cosmic designs/very good self-maintenance, hasn't aged since 2003. And now, he's surpassed mortal divinity once more: this time, with the world's most perfect beard.

On the campaign trail of his latest directorial gig, an adaptation of Joseph Heller's seminal satire Catch-22, Clooney debuted a beard that was Just Right. Years flitting between clean-shaven and full Jeff Bridges hirsutery has resulted in facial hair that does several things at once. Let's break it down.

What kind of sorcery is this? A lovely beard, that’s what.

First, it's the right amount of facial fuzz. In an age when countless guys confuse a big bushy beard for a personality, Clooney has kept it cropped.

Then it's the effort behind the seeming effortlessness. The maintenance is understated, a close (but not forensic) trip that doesn't go too low on the cheeks, nor too high on the neck. It looks natural.
