Hosting the Fifa Best Awards on Monday night, Idris Elba stole the show when he took to the stage wearing waistcoat adorned with photographs of Gareth Southgate ...wearing a waistcoat.

The The Wire star was criticised by some social media users after forgetting lines and mispronouncing names throughout the evening. But all of that faded into insignificance when the suit jacket came off, blinding the audience with the migraine-inducing garment beneath.

King of Waistcoats, Southgate himself even managed to crack a smile at Elba's unconventional tailoring choices, despite none of his players making it into the FIFPro World XI.

The England manager became the main style talking point of the World Cup earlier in the year after wearing a tailored waistcoat as he watched his team from the sidelines. It was such a hit with consumers that Marks and Spencer reported a 35% surge in waistcoat sales, thanks to what the retailer dubbed "the Gareth Southgate effect".

Still, despite Southgate having gotten away with all that World Cup waistcoat wearing, the rest of us would do well to give this particular piece of tailoring a wide berth unless paired with a suit.

Leave the lone waistcoats to Southgate, Russell Brand, mid-2000s indie bands and people who get a bit too hot while dancing at weddings. Instead, a simple shirt is all you need.

Granted, it probably won't land you on Idris Elba's next statement garment, but at least you'll be able to look back in ten years time without wincing yourself into a coma.
