Who's that bloke over there? Y'know, that really cool, ridiculously stylish guy? He keeps cracking jokes and everybody laughs. He just put his hand on a stranger's shoulder without it being at all weird or awkward. Look, someone just bought him a totally unsolicited beer. What's his name? I hate him, and I want to be him, and I'd really like my significant other to stop talking to him.
Well folks, that's Jake Gyllenhaal. And it could be you too if you follow his example.
At a New York screening of his latest flick Wildlife, the 37-year-old commanded the photocall (and our attention) by melding one of menswear's more experimental trends - the kimono jacket - with the stuff that always works. Which, in this instance, means a standout print above a white T-shirt, and beneath a classic black overcoat.
The benefits are twofold. Not only does Gyllenhaal exercise some confidence (the kimono jacket is still in relatively uncharted waters), but the statement is effortless: he's not trying too hard. That means you can do the same if the palette stays muted, and everything else is simple. One print is quite enough for party season.
So, while your Penguin wrapper jokes may need improving, know that the perfect party outfit is much more attainable. Turn heads (and hearts) below.
