Daniel Craig's James Bond may have No Time To Die, but it is, actually, the actor's final turn as 007. Soon, he'll be gone. And so, on his farewell tour as 007, the 51-year-old bid adieu in the shade that was built for goodbyes: black. Precisely the pallbearer, mob boss black that has recently found a new life outside the funeral chapel.
At the unveiling of the new Omega James Bond watch in New York (the Swiss marque has long been favoured by the fictional philanderers of MI6), Craig opted for an all-black suit that does two things. One: it eliminates shadow, and thus extra pounds, to cut a flattering silhouette. (Somewhat unnecessary for a man that melted cinema screens the world over in barely-there sky blue Speedos, but still). And two: it plugs into the recent menswear blackout, in which the left-field suits of early 2019 have given way to darker, brooding all-black tailoring.
Which is a huge breaking of the menswear rules. But guess what? Nobody cares. Well, your grandfather might. Though if Bond's doing it – the long-time standard bearer of ultra-traditional menswear – chances are that it's probably OK for you to do so as well.
Who says that this isn't a funeral of sorts, anyway? Look at all the evidence. Bond is actually dressing for a warzone this time round. The trailer hints at deep betrayal by a permanently breathless Léa Seydoux. Even long-time fans salivate at the thought of 007 meeting his maker. Perhaps Craig is signalling something with his wardrobe – besides the fact that he's bang on-trend.
