The British summertime: once a fickle creature, now an unrelenting beast of fire and fury. Bad news for crops, but good news for your sunglasses. After all, this summer in particular has seen a long line of eyewear deities ascend the pantheon, with Michael Douglas out-styling you at 74-years-old, and Daniel Craig turning to the dark side in a pair of aviators. But there's a newly-installed king on the throne. That man is James McAvoy.

At Comic-Con 2019 in San Diego, the Dark Phoenix star followed the translucent tip, opting for a pair of plastic-rimmed Wayfarers to greet the superfans. It's not the first time we've seen this. But, owing to the versatility of the humble Wayfarer (if they worked for JFK, they will undoubtedly work for you), it's a subtle way to upgrade on a fool-proof formula: tinted plastic is a less formal choice of eyewear, and one that's far removed from the Klaxons-induced mephedrone nightmares of 2007.

McAvoy's shaes will go with most things, too. The summer wedding in which you have to hide tired, hungover eyes for instance, or perhaps the Saturday afternoon drink that turns into 12 hours of cocktails and unnecessary Ubers (sunglasses still worn in the backseat at approximately 4am).

They are, in short, a great choice. And, if the current appetite of tinted lenses isn't quite to your taste, tinted plastic frames may be an easier way to flirt with the trend. So all hail the king, until the next man with immense sunglasses comes along, anyway.
