We're not exactly sure how casting directors pick their stars (tea leaves? Astral charts? Throwing darts at headshots?) but we'd like to suggest a new approach – having them dress like potential characters on red carpets, ideally while stood right next to the real version. That way, you can assess the likeness in real time. It definitely beats your potential star emailing over a monologue that they shot in their hotel bathroom.

Granted, there's not that much evidence to support our theory, but what we do have is rather compelling. To whit: Ansel Elgort, star of Baby Driver and The Goldfinch, and arguably the world's new greatest luvvie, who grabbed his chance at the premiere of HBO's Ralph Lauren documentary,Very Ralph, to audition for any upcoming biopics of America's greatest fashion designer.

Ansel Elgort channels Ralph Lauren at the Very Ralph premiere

As the man himself stood a few feet away, Elgort channelled Eighties Ralph in a double-breasted blazer (complete with regatta-friendly metal buttons), a banker-collar striped shirt, and a club tie. Knotted over, of all things, a collar pin. Granted, Elgort's tailored fit was more modern Ralph than retro Ralph, but the tasselled loafers were vintage RL.

The whole get-up made us hanker for some big-budget fashion designer biopics, focusing on the men who've remade menswear. As we've mentioned, we're not casting directors. But if we were, we'd be pitching Bradley Cooper as Tom Ford, Jonah Hill for Kim Jones, and Eddie Redmayne as Raf Simons. If only to see them head-to-toe in the looks on their next red carpet.
