Justin Theroux leans on a signature aesthetic: that of an elusive duke of nocturnal LA, and one that only appears at the most niche of gigs at The Viper Room. Louis Vuitton's SS20 show saw a similar costume. But his choice of watch however, was far from the smoky, sticky-floored backrooms of a rock club. This watch went for the reverse. This watch went straight to a reserved table on the edge of an impossibly exclusive Miami dance floor.
That's because he opted for a yellow gold, gleaming, glorious Audemars Piguet Royal Oak. As respected in the Swiss circle as it is the courts of hip-hop royalty, this specific reference - a Royal Oak 'Jumbo' Extra Thin (#15202BA.OO.1240BA.01) - is of particular note. At a 39mm diameter, it's relatively big. It's also bold. Plus, with an 18-carat case and a haul of painstakingly detailed features, it's Audemars Piguet through and through.
Inside, a technically robust self-winding movement has been placed on a diet, with the AP 2121 caliber now clocking in at a slight 3.05mm thickness. And if seeing is believing, know that an open caseback acts as a shop window to the mechanics within. It's this well-crafted stuff that launches a luxury manufacture past niche pursuit and into the public consciousness. A tall order when pieces can cost north of £20,000, sure, and yet Audemars Piguet has achieved such with aplomb.
Just look to the small, and eclectic, army of fans. Novak Djovokic opted for a Royal Oak Day & Date. Mr Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has been known to indulge. But, most famously, it's seen as a wrist of honour for the echelons of hip-hop: Jay-Z has one, Swizz Beatz designed one, Rick Ross named a mixtape after one, and Nicki Minaj often raps about one (we refer you to the seminal classic, 'I Wanna Be With You' feat. DJ Khaled, amongst others).
And so, while Theroux's rep as a prince of darkness remains intact, you can expect to find him in a newly-acquired condo on Miami Beach from time to time. He's got the wristwear for it anyway.
