Yes, at the premiere of latest mutant blockbuster Dark Phoenix, the Tolkien star embraced one of the boldest (and trickiest) tailoring trends of late: the Big Seventies Suit.
All the boxes were ticked. We had flares. Not just a whisper of a bootcut, but proper, wide, disco inferno flares. Then there was colour. Beneath overarching cerulean blue tailoring, there was a pop of mustard: two shades that are unlikely bedfellows in theory, but make for a happy marriage in practice. And lest we forget the minor details. Inflated peak lapels, a square-dialled watch (think Jaeger-LeCoultre's Reverso or a Cartier Tank) and an unbuttoned shirt push the look from retro reference to full seventies regalia.
Granted, many guys will prefer to err on the side of classic. But it is proof that you can do the whole throwback without looking like a very novelty, very flammable fancy dress guest.
