Marvel films are fun to watch (and time-consuming, because three hours of spandex and self-indulgent saviour complexes really is a lot). They're a bit silly too. Which, granted, doesn't make for natural Oscarbait. But for the millions and millions and millions of people who love them, the MCU is pure escapism – a formula which never grows tired (again, largely speaking for the people who love them). The reboots and the re-reboots are legion. There's been four Spider-Mans in two decades. That's wild. And, in that wildness, Marvel stands apart from regular Hollywood. Makes sense, then, that its Hollywood cast treats the ribbon cutting ceremony a little differently.

Last night in Los Angeles (Tinseltown, baby!), it was Oscar Isaac's turn. The newly-minted Moon Knight went for a look that's not really standard red carpet stuff. It was head-to-toe brown. No, it was cinnamon. No, actually, it was russet. And while tonal works in directional photoshoots and post-apocalyptic sci-fi utopias where THINGS ARE NOT WHAT THEY SEEM, this is relatively risky stuff for an A-lister. For anyone, really. Things can go wrong. You could be accused of trying too hard.

Not so for Isaac. By adjusting the contrast of a shirt, it's less co-ord, and more statement smart-casual. Anchor with a pair of Oxford shoes, and you're officially Making An Effort. He's not an outlier either. On that very same night, Ethan Hawke, an actor with a career that spans everything from Dead Poets Society to The Purge, ditched the usual two-punch of a navy on white tailoring for full length lavender. That's not regular stuff.

Both fall into a grander, wider tradition of Marvel stars getting a bit weird (in a good way). On the Avengers campaign trail, Robert Downey Jr. went semi-method in fully-mad shirts that could've easily hung in Tony Stark's well-lit, overly large, AI-controlled wardrobe. Tom Holland oscillates between print clash New Prep and trippy knits from Berluti. Benedict Cumberbatch ignored false diktats and went for blue and black and a pair of sunglasses when it didn't even look that sunny. There's a pattern with the MCU stable.

Is yet another Marvel release the most exciting thing Hollywood has to offer? Maybe not. Its red carpet, however, is another story.
