For many, Pierce Brosnan was the ultimate James Bond (well, for anyone young enough to have suffered a crushing loss to a sibling on GoldenEye 64). And the sentiment remains. The 66-year-old still fills out a classic tux like no other. His spawn, too, are perhaps a premonition of Bonds to come. But despite that, his latest look in LA wasn't at all 007.
That's a good thing. For Brosnan's tailoring move is decidedly en vogue, and not at all in-step with the stone-carved diktats of Savile Row: splintered tailoring. Or tailored separates. Or a mismatched suit. Look, whatever you want to call it, the art of pick-n-mixing your two-piece is a welcome change of pace, and like Brosnan, there's an easy to way to get it right.
Match your palette. So, like The World Is Not Enough star so deftly demonstrates, a charcoal double-breasted blazer sits pretty atop pitch black trousers. Look to the unbuttoned, tie-less shirt too. It's a bit more relaxed. Bond on a Bank Holiday, if you will. A checked-out Bond that's happy to clear his desk after another line manager reports to HR that, actually, it's not OK to kill 938 freedom fighters on a single assignment.
What's more, there's wriggle room to be had. Navy blazers are a fine counter to creamier trousers. Print clashes are gathering steam as the punchier move du jour, too (Celine saw varying degrees of leopard print for Aw19, while Oliver Spencer put checks tête-à-tête).
All of which puts Brosnan firmly on trend. And with it, old school Bond's nose firmly out of joint. We approve.
