Of all the clothes I’ve worn, the Deadpool suit made me feel pretty good. It brings out the worst in me. It all comes out when we get that thing on, I love wearing it and I never take it for granted as I spent 10 years trying to get the film made.
On a lazy weekend, I’m in sweatpants. I need something easy and I can move in. But, maybe it’s an old-fashioned quality of mine, I have to stick to proper shirts and trousers if I go outside.
As a teen, I had a few style icons. It all depended upon whether I was going through a classic phase or not. I watched nearly every Cary Grant movie ever made, and there are a lot of them. When I got a little older, I became more ironic, so I would imitate The National Lampoon-style with the Members Only jacket. Then that actually got cool for a while.
I’ve worked in showbusiness for 26 years now, and you’re constantly catching photos of yourself 10 or 15 years ago at some event and 9 times out of ten, you cringe. About a decade ago, I thought: let’s keep things a little bit more classic. You look at the guys in movies that are 75 years old and they still look amazing, so best stick to that.
When choosing a fragrance, it has to be warm and inviting. Some fragrances do the opposite. I want to smell approachable in a subtle way, which Armani Code does.
My scent memory is vivid: I always think the cheapest and most affordable drug on Earth is nostalgia. Growing up in British Columbia, I had access to an incredible natural playground, and that smell of that world of Douglas fir trees and redwood trees is the best smell on Earth.
You try to avoid polluting a character with your own style, but I’ve had a few roles that have definitely impressed something upon me. I was never a guy that wore colourful suits until my last movie The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard. A few scenes have bold and outrageous patterned suits. That was fun. That’s something I might do on red carpets.
I’m not sure if anyone can hold a candle to Chadwick Boseman. I wish I could dress like that. I wish I had the guts to dress like that: he’s such a beautiful dresser and everything he wears looks like it’s made exclusively for him. Maybe they are made exclusively for him, who knows?
I have an old Rick Owens leather jacket that’s been with me all over the world on 30 or 40 motorcycle trips. It’s got a patina you couldn’t replicate; it’s been through thunderstorms, hail, rain, lightening, snow, brutal sun all over the world on five continents. I got it sixteen years ago. At the time I’d never even heard of Rick Owens: it was just the perfect motorcycle jacket: a bit more expensive, but worth the investment.
Despite all the sneakers and shoes on offer, I’ve gone back to Chuck Taylors as early as I can remember.
I work with a stylist Ilaria Urbinati. It’s a collaborative process. She knows what I’d like, and she’s good at pushing me in places where I need to be pushed.
I think I’m going to try out more mesh in 2019. A nice mesh three-piece. Sounds fun.
