Red is Rihanna’s colour, in the same way Prince's was purple, Andre 3000’s is green and Beyoncé claims gold. Fittingly, the hitmaker chose to rock it from head to toe for her Super Bowl LVII show, with a look composed of a custom-made Loewe jumpsuit, a floor-length Alaïa coat and, of course, a pair of performance trainers. Namely, MM6 Maison Margiela x Salomon trainers.

Now, this isn’t the first time Rihanna has sported Salomons. In fact, the Bajan superstar was one of the first A-listers to incorporate the sports equipment company into her everyday ensembles (see @badgirlriri’s 2019 birthday post), and her partner A$AP Rocky is no stranger to Salomon either. But to champion the brand at a performance watched by millions worldwide, guaranteed to go down in music history, suggests the singer has a stronger affinity for the French marque than we imagined.

The specific sneak that Rihanna rocked on stage at the NFL spectacle originates from the MM6 Maison Margiela x Salomon collaboration that debuted in late 2022. Named the Cross Low, the trail running-inspired silhouette – also available in black and beige – fuses Maison Margiela subline’s innovative attitude towards reforming wardrobe essentials with Salomon’s performance-first approach.

By pairing Salomon sneakers with a high-fashion look bereft of a hiking vibe, Rihanna signals a future where the most prominent pieces of the waning gorpcore movement will be assimilated into sartorial norms. So, keep hold of your XT-4s and XT-6s, your Arc’teryx torques and rain jackets, your Columbia fleeces and trekking trousers, and continue to wear them – just not together.

The MM6 Maison Margiela x Salomon Cross Low is available for £295 on Farfetch and End, and will soon be restocked for the same price on the Maison Margiela webstore.
