As a men's style writer, my biggest pet peeve ever—ever!—is when actors stick to basic, safe, no-frills looks on the red carpet. Many good men have fallen prey to the never-ending trap of a simple black suit and tie. Timothée Chalamet is not one of them.

At the 81st Annual Golden Globes Awards Sunday night, the actor, who is nominated for the Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy award for his role in Wonka, took to the red carpet in a glitzy, all-black look by Celine Homme that perfectly combines the sleek and the playful, the formal and the fun.

Chalamet is no stranger to a bit of shine, as seen from his past looks, ranging from a sparkly harness to an entirely-sequinned black hoodie, and you know what? Props where props are due, because when you find something that works for you—in this case, black sequins—you stick to it.

With a subtle geometric pattern, Chalamet's tailored jacket plays on classic suiting but kicks things up a notch. He's donning a necklace, as per usual, and with the first few buttons of his black button-down undone, leading into simple, timeless pants and elegant boots, it's clear that if there was ever a way to make monochrome dynamic and eye-catching, it's this.
