You’re saving the world… in that? Smulders by name, etc. Cast your eyes upon the model/actress set to take the latest big-screen comic book franchise by storm. In a catsuit, naturally.
When you look like Cobie Smulders — those dazzling eyes, that flawless, physics-defying body — there’s always the option of becoming a model. “It just kinda happened,” says the Canadian, who turns 30 this month, of her initial career path. “I was still in school, so instead of going to summer camp my holidays were in Paris, Milan and Tokyo.”
Her subsequent transition to acting — her current occupation — was a little more considered, but not much. “I’d always loved theatre, so as soon as I had the chance I thought I’d give it a go!”
For the perennially over-achieving Smulders, “giving it a go” entailed swiftly landing a lead role in How I Met Your Mother, the hugely popular US sitcom, alongside Jason Segel and Neil Patrick Harris. The upcoming eighth season is rumoured to be the show’s last, but Smulders’ schedule remains frenetic — most recently, she has been busy zipping herself into a leather catsuit (bless you, Hollywood) for upcoming superhero epic Avengers Assemble.
“I play agent Maria Hill of SHIELD — she’s a badass,” says Smulders, “I was doing taekwando, boxing — I’ve gotten pretty ripped!”
Smulders is in good company — Samuel L Jackson plays Nick Fury, director of SHIELD, with Robert Downey Jr as Iron Man, Chris Evans as Captain America and Chris Hemsworth as Thor, plus Scarlett Johansson and Gwyneth Paltrow.
While scrupulously refusing to divulge any spoilers, Smulders happily admits to having fallen in love with the many action scenes — “my only demands were to hit more things and shoot more bullets!” — and confirms something we’ve long suspected about Samuel L Jackson (“he’s the coolest guy in the universe”). Smulders is locked in for up to eight more Marvel films, meaning agent Maria Hill — and her catsuit — may be about to become a rather integral part of our lives. Super.
Avengers Assemble is out on 26 April
