Zara Martin: How To Impress Me

The model and DJ talks her skinny jean repulsion, her Jesus look-a-like fixation and why you need to put your phone away and pay attention

We don't need to tell you that Zara Martin is beautiful. If you haven't already seen her on TV, you've probably seen her modelling for the likes of Olivia Rubin and New Look, and if you're really lucky, you might have even seen her DJ.

It's the latter that has been taking up the British-Indian-Italian's time when Esquire meets her on a bright and clear day in Soho. Having just flown back from a week spinning records in New York, Zara is due to fly out that night for another gig, followed by the season's closing party at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Not that you'd notice any hint of jetlag – friendly and funny, chatting to Martin in person leaves you feeling like your day is going to turn out significantly better than you'd hoped.

As part of our regular "How To Impress Me" feature we sat down with Zara over a pot of green tea (clearly the key to looking great) to discuss chat up lines, why dinner dates are awful and why a well-fitted suit will always be your friend.

Sitting across the dinner table isn’t a great first date. It’s awkward being expected to come up with dazzling conversation and be witty while making sure there’s nothing stuck in your teeth.

The whole “who pays the bill” thing is really awful. I definitely always offer to pay, but I get kind of cringed out.

I went out for dinner one time and the guy brought his feng shui master. We were just sharing a table at a Chinese restaurant and I didn’t realise he was part of the equation for quite a while. I was shocked.

I’m a sucker for a man in a well-fitted suit. I spend so much time at gigs and festivals that I think I’ve developed a repulsion towards skinny jeans and leather jackets.

I don’t mind jewelry on men, but I met this Johnny Depp wannabe once and his whole chat revolved around his feather earing. You can get away with bracelets, a necklace, but that’s it.

Captain Von Trapp from The Sound Of Music is pretty hot, in his sharp captain’s uniform.

The best chat up line I heard was where a guy came up and hit my leg with his knee then said “I need you”. It was funny, but it didn’t really work.

I read that “attention is the rarest and purest form of generosity.” It’s so true. Put your phone away and pay attention.

Be a man, but one that smells nice. Shower, deodorant and cut your toenails.

I'd love a guy to take me to Istanbul. It has a really sexy energy the people are really fun – everywhere you look there’s an explosion of colour.

I think men are concerned with things about themselves that women aren’t. I don’t think any woman is too bothered about what a guy looks like. Everything goes out of the window if the personality isn’t there.

My type is guys who look like Jesus, with complex characters and crippling insecurities. I’m drawn to creative people and I think being insecure is part of that. I’m working on getting a new type.
