There was talk during production that Guy Ritchie's big budget reinvention of Britain's greatest detective had run into problems. Happily, the reality is that Ritchie has pulled off a big, bold and highly entertaining first instalment in what looks set to become a profitable franchise for Warner Bros.
This doesn't feel like a typical Guy Ritchie movie either, which will be a relief to some. It's silly in places but Victorian London is depicted with verve and conviction, while Jude Law nearly succeeds in stealing the points from his wilful, wild-haired co-star, with a muscular Dr Watson who comes across as a winning hybrid of Ross Kemp and Rigsby.
