Zack Snyder’s latest film, Rebel Moon Part One – A Child of Fire, takes place in an entirely new galaxy. It is ruled by the shadowy Motherworld, whose army inflict a brutal force on its subject planets. In this first instalment, we follow farm-worker-with-a-past Kora (played by Sofia Boutella) as she heads on an action-packed quest with Gunnar (Michiel Huisman) to save a rural community. Along the way, they bump into plenty of unsavoury faces – including a memorable turn from Ed Skrein’s cruel admiral – and assemble a rag-tag group of warriors.

For Freeze Frame, Snyder talked Esquire through crucial sequences from the caper, from barn-storming fights to Western-style saloon shoot-outs. How does the director go for broke in those combat scenes? Where does he source those out-of-this-world weaponry? And some behind-the-scenes information on how to make rain scenes possible. Our humble suggestion? Shoot your next film in England.
