Like a more melodious Nico, Welsh singer Cate Le Bon (no relation to Simon, we've checked) has one of those voices that is both richly earthy and bell-clear; she also manages to sound like she's from the Sixties without toppling into pastiche (The Thrills, we mean you).
She clearly caught the ear of Super Furry Animals' Gruff Rhys, who has made her the first signing to his fledging record label. The psychedelic video for "Hollow Trees House Hounds", above, has a certain under-funded, over-ambitious charm — like an ideas brainstorm where nothing got crossed out – but it's the song that'll really stick.
Cate Le Bon's debut album, My Oh My, is out on 12 October (Irony Bored) and she's currently touring the UK with Slow Club. For dates visit www.myspace.com/catelebon
