So here we are again, being sold on Scarlett Johansson’s dulcet tones. It ain’t another album of covers though – it’s Spike Jonze’s new romantic drama, Her. (No hard feelings, SJ, but we're still reeling a little from what you did to "I Don't Wanna Grow Up")
Johansson plays Samantha, a decidedly more gorgeous HAL-9000 (and yes, there is a hierarchy of gorgeousness of home operating system voices). Joaquin Phoenix – who plays a brilliant loner – will also star in Jonze’s fourth feature.
As with Karen O and Where The Wild Things Are, Jonze is leaning heavily on alt-rockers for the film’s soundtrack, tapping Arcade Fire to score the sci-fi-laced romance.
On paper, the concept seems like it could veer into dangerously kitschy territory. But in the hands of Jonze and Phoenix, Her is one of our films worth watching this autumn.
On another note: congrats, Tim Cook – you've just been gifted your Siri blueprint for the next decade.
