As self-confessed super fans of the original Dumb & Dumber, it was a surreal delight to sit down for a quick chat with not only Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels but one half of directors the Farrelly Brothers to talk about the sequel.

To find out what it was like revisiting Harry and Lloyd after twenty years – and working with Bill Murray – read on.

How was it rechanneling Harry and Lloyd?

Jim Carrey: Easy peasy. Jeff just shakes his head and gives himself a voluntary concussion before every take. And I just do my best to push aside this cursed intelligence.

Jeff Daniels: It’s like they were waiting for us, the characters.

JC: Definitely. It’s like they exist on their own. There’s a Lloyd Christmas out there and I’m not him anymore. It’s bizarre.

Where will the guys be in twenty years time – and will we find out?

JC: Second base.

Peter Farrelly: Exactly! No, they don’t change. All they have in this world is each other, and I think they will end up with each other. They were made for each other.

Why revisit Dumb and Dumber, of all your films?

PF: For that very reason. There’s no growth. The guys don’t change. At the end of the first one you could just tell another story. Also, because of all the characters we’ve created, they’re the best two.

JC: Yeah that’s kind of just the same answer. I’m not sure that’s what he’s looking for...

That's fine. The film seemed to be made very much with fans of the original in mind.

PF: Definitely. These guys are pretty simple when you think about it: they don’t swear, they don’t do drugs, they don’t drink…

JC: ...they don’t have sex…

PF: No, they’re simple guys. So their humour stayed the same, we didn’t want them to be suddenly ironic, just because that’s in vogue. They’re who they are, so we decided to live or die by that.

I noticed Bill Murray played Harry’s roommate.

JD: Did he!? He was the guy in the mask? Oh my God!

PF: Yeah we didn’t tell you that.

JC: That was him.

JD: That’s awesome! So I was in a Bill Murray film?

PF: Yeah. He didn’t want you to know.

JC: Yeah Bill was like “don’t tell Jeff I am here”. You know I’m such a crazy Bill Murray fan that I literally didn’t know what to say to him half the time.

PF: Bill did it because he loves Dumb and Dumber, and he loves these guys. So Bill was in awe, and Jim was in awe…

JC: So we pretty much ignored each other.

PF: It’s like Mick Jagger hanging out with John Lennon. What do you say to each other? ‘I like your stuff’?!

JC: I know, exactly! ‘Remember when you did this thing? Remember when you Ghostbusted?’

Dumb and Dumber To is out 19 December.
