Making a Murderer's worldwide popularity meant that a second series was always going to be a tall order.

A lot of viewers became so addicted to the true-crime documentary that they kept adrift of all news relating to Steven Avery and his infamous family after its airing. How do you make the second series as shocking and dramatic as the first when the plot has lived on our timelines for over a year?

We'll get to see soon enough, because Netflix has announced series two is set to arrive later this year.

Speaking to USA Today, Cindy Holland, VP for original content, said: 'The story is still ongoing, so you will see new episodes coming sometime this year as this story continues to unfold.

"We don't know when for sure new episodes will be coming."

The documentary makers Moira Demos and Laura Ricciardi are keeping their cards close to their chest in terms of details. Cindy Holland continued:

"Laura and Moira are [in Manitowoc] shooting regularly and working on what the right story is to tell in the next set, so we're deferring to them on when it will be ready.

"Very few people inside of Netflix actually know the details of what we're getting because we're wanting to keep it really under wraps and it is an ongoing case so we're trying to be sensitive to that," she added.
