In further evidence that being a goalkeeper is a cruel, lonely life only a madman would pursue, Newcastle United keeper Karl Darlow has committed what may well be the howler of the season against Norwich .
After what has been a superb individual season so far in the Toon's more-or-less-on-track bid for promotion back into the Premier League, the Englishman dashed out of his box to clear a long ball and sliced it into the path of striker Cameron Jerome who duly slotted it away with the glee of a man picking up a tenner from the floor of an empty carpark.
The goal put the Canaries 2-1 up, although one small mercy for Darlow is that Jamaal Lascelles later equalised to salvage a point and keep Newcastle top of the league.
Still: a chilling reminder that while strikers can miss sitters and defenders can mistime tackles and generally get away with it, a goalkeeper's clanger will haunt him forever. Expect to see this one in YouTube compilations for decades to come.
