A bit like cats or Formula One racing cars, the elite footballer is a skittish, fickle and high maintenance beast, and none more so than Cristiano Ronaldo, who is saying that he now wants to quit Real Madrid after a tax row with the Spanish authorities.

Portuguese daily newspaper A Bola this morning claimed the Real Madrid striker has made an "irreversible" decision to leave Spain after he was accused of defrauding 14.7 million euros of taxes for his image rights.

Real Madrid issued a statement fully supporting the player, claiming they were "absolutely convinced of his innocence." But that might not enough to convince the 32-year-old to stay, despite having just won a second successive Champions League, his fourth overall, with Madrid.
