Founder member of Massive Attack Rob Del Naja, aka 3D, contributed this striking cover for our 20th anniversary Take Cover Project. Here he explains the idea behind it.
Can you believe your debut album Blue Lines is 20 years old this month?
Twenty minutes is a long time in show business.
What are your memories of that spring of 1991?
Analogue. The cassette in the picture is a “Blue Lines” master... taken home and listened to on the M4 back down to Bristol, played to mates on car stereos and a Walkman in the park.
How have the last 20 years been for you?
They have been defined by the information age. The microchip and the internet have completely changed everything. Meanwhile, all my experiences and memories are of people — in studios, on tour, in countless rooms and cities, crazy festivals and shows and parties. I guess it doesn’t matter how far technology transforms the world, my brain isn’t wired into it… yet!
Cognitive behavioural therapy.
