Is it really an England v Germany game if the Brits don't have the faint whiff of hope extinguished by the game ending in penalties and inevitable loss? No, it turns out.
Last night was the turn of the England Under-21 team to partake in the national ritual of losing to the Germans.
There were murmurings online that this brave bunch of youngsters could redeem our first team's abysmal performance at the Euros.
So having reached the semi-finals (more than our first team can boast) it looked like the future might not be doomed to repeat itself.
Until Nathan Redmond stepped up for the final attempt. He wasn't able to net the ball, causing the Germans to cavort around in celebration whilst England adopted the national position of head between hands in dismay.
Not that Twitter were surprised about how things turned out...
Looks like some of the Under-21s are hoping to make it into the England first team, where captain Gareth Southgate can show them how to really lose on penalties to Germany.
