Phil Neville just wants an easy life, really. A charity kick-about here, an existentially sad breakfast there – nothing more and nothing less.
But Carlos Puyol is bored, and he wants to feel the studs-on-flesh fire again. That's the only way to explain the former Barcelona captain's horrendous challenge on the Neville brother during the international Star Sixes tournament yesterday.
Steven Gerrard, Michael Owen and Paul Merson bared witness to Puyol's potential leg-breaker, with the commentator labeled "the worst tackle I've ever seen on a football field."
Owen opened the scoring, but Spain shot back with four goals to win the match. Puyol's tackle remained the main talking point of the game – but Neville had a sense of humour about it…
Something tells us it would have been a different story in his playing days.
