Sunday was a night of highs and lows for Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Real Madrid captain scored a scorcher of a goal against fierce rivals Barcelona in the 80th minute of the Super Cup first-leg, setting his team in motion for an impressive 3-1 win.

What's more, he took the opportunity to rip his shirt off and tense like a bronzen Patrick Bateman for the cameras. He received an inevitable yellow card for the celebration, but even so, you'd think that nothing could ruin his night.

That is, until the former Manchester United star was shown the red card a minute later for allegedly diving under the pressure of Barcelona defender Samuel Umtiti as he was through on goal.

Infuriated by the decision (especially in light of the fact that Luis Suarez was suspected of diving for Barcelona's earlier penalty), the Portuguese captain gave referee Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea a little shove before leaving the pitch.

And now, according to Goal, Ronaldo could miss up to 12 matches for his regrettable decision under Article 96 of the Spanish federation's rule book, which deals with "Slight violence towards referees".

Bengoetxea included the altercation in his post-game match report, writing: "Player: Cristiano Ronaldo Dos Santos Aveiro. Once the red card was shown, the player pushed me slightly in a sign of disagreement."

Now he's really got a reason to feel tense.
