Elon Musk Is Creating A Rocket That Can Fly You To America In 29 Minutes (And Mars, If You Fancy It)

He wants to perform his first mission as early as 2022

Elon Musk has a lot of hair-brained ideas – It's kind of his thing – but it looks like his biggest ambition could be about to become a reality.

The Paypal co-founder has spent the past decade trying to get us onto Mars with his company Space X, but in a recent announcement at the International Astronautical Congress in Adelaide, Australia, he pitched an idea a little closer to home.

According to Musk, Space X's upcoming BFR ("Big Fucking Rocket") will not only allow us to fly to Mars within 7 years, but also travel across the Atlantic Ocean in just 29 minutes.

Musk said the BFR, which is around nine meters in diameter, will be able to lift 150 metric tons and carry around 100 people per flight in 40 cabins.

He went on to say he wants to launch his first mission as early as 2022.

"That's not a typo," Musk said. "It is aspirational."

The news follows Musk's assertions that he wants to build a liveable environment on Mars, and turn humans into a "multiplanetary species".
