Book of the week - Take Ivy

We’ve been waiting six months but we have finally taken delivery of a copy of Take Ivy. It’s a must have, not least because there’s been so much hype around it – you can read our contribution to that hype here.

It’ll be interesting to anyone who cares about fashion because so much of what we’re wearing now has its origins in the clothes featured in the book, which depicts the way American Ivy League students dressed in 1965. Here is a list of our initial impressions:

It’s clear the guys in the photos aren’t professional models; some look a bit lumpy.

The only hoods on show are on casual rain jackets, apart from two men in hoodies preparing to row.

It’s amazing how relaxed the men look in soft shirts, skinny ties and tweed jackets.

We want to wear jeans with black loafers and white socks right now.

All the guys are wearing their trousers short.

Most Popular

The trousers are really tight, and in many cases pretty unflattering.

Everyone’s got really short hair.

Madras-check shorts are great.

Aside from college motifs none of the clothes bear visible logos.

There’s a section shot on New York’s Madison Avenue that features a man dressed just like Don Draper.

The soft-shouldered jackets look relaxed in a contemporary way – the construction totally changes the impression made by the tailored clothes.

‘The 20-Article Yale University Dress Code’ in the appendix remains a fine, near un-improvable, guide to modern dress even though the very idea of giving students a dress code is hilarious.

The whole book has the spirit of an anthropology project about it.

By now anyone who follows the style blogs, like Ivy Style will be familiar with a lot of the photographs.

Nobody wears a tracksuit, even when they’re exercising.

There are very few men wearing sunglasses.

It rains a lot.

But that doesn’t mean there aren’t guys going sockless.

Not even Ivy Style can make a short-sleeve shirt look good.

The sub-£10 price we paid on Amazon is a bargain.
