Sadly, the Penguin Magnum Collection is not the frozen-chocolate-biscuit-on-a-lolly-stick collaboration we've been dreaming of for so many years, but a stylishly designed selection of classic American reportage paperbacks wrapped in iconic images from the Magnum photography agency's archive. Still, they would probably make less of a mess of our bookshelves.
The titles include A Man On The Moon by Andrew Chaikin, about the Apollo 17 astronauts' unplanned lunar pit-stop, with a cover image by Rene Burri, and Norman Mailer's classic account of the Rumble in the Jungle, The Fight, with Ali and Foreman captured mid-exchange by Abbas. The images extend all the way from from the front cover to back, which can make for some odd crops: Hellfire, Nick Tosches' biography of Jerry Lee Lewis, only has the cousin-bedding piano man on the reverse, with just an odd chunk of Steinway on the front. Also the barcodes are on the spine, which doesn't look too pretty when they're lined up. But on the plus side, we like the circular sticker-effect titles and hey, what's a little radical barcode placement between friends?
The Penguin Magnum Collection of Penguin paperbacks is published on 28 May, £9.99 each.
