The Game

Darksiders II

Death becomes you or rather, you become Death, in the latest Darksiders game.

There’s been plenty of modern end-of-the-world action in gaming recently, with terrorists going doolally in every soldier shooter and sci-fi final reckonings in Gears of War and Mass Effect. However, Vigil Games likes to do things old school — or rather, Old Testament — shunning IEDs and dirty bombs for fire and brimstone. After the success of 2010’s Darksiders, where you took on War, one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, the developers are back with an equally doom-laden sequel.

Darksiders II, in what must be something of a promotion, sees you now commanding Death in a game set somewhere between Heaven and Hell rather unfortunately called the “Nether Realms”. Death is a bit miffed that his old pal War has been accused by the powers that be (the Charred Council, since you ask… OK, you didn’t) of starting the Apocalypse early (you know how it is, you’re getting all keyed up for destruction and someone starts the party while you’re still dusting off your favourite scythe). In short, Death is up for a fight.

This hack’n’slash platformer has been built on a grand scale, so think huge levels and areas to wage terrible vengeance on practically anything you come in contact with. But be warned, brains will have to be engaged, too, as, like the first game, devilish puzzles are placed in your way throughout. Now go kick something nasty in the Nether Realms.

Darksiders II is out in August on PC, Xbox and PS3
