Pray tell, who is this mysterious creature?
FKA twigs, the newest cult-artist-in-the-making whose debut album is out this month. Her real name is Tahliah Barnett, she’s 26; the FKA stands for “Formerly Known As” (because someone else had already nabbed “twigs”) and there’s no capital T, because capital Ts are for TW*TS, probably.
Haven’t I seen her some place before?
If you’re a big fan of Jessie J, and we’re sure you are, then maybe: she’s danced in two of her videos. Her own super-weird promos have also got some good online traction — watch her test her gag reflex in “Papi Pacify” — and the fashion set loves her; she’s already been on the cover of iD.
What’s with the hair/nose ring/plaits?
Twigs – sorry, twigs – has been sporting this look for a while, with her distinctive centre parting, slicked-down edges, and septum ring, as her Instagram and Tumblr accounts attest. We can’t help wondering if a certain PlayStation advert might have kicked the whole thing off.
How does she sound?
Floaty and ethereal vocals over stuttering splinky-sploinks (yes that is a technical term) and pendulous bass; oh, and her lyrics are downright dirrrrty.
Who should I file her next to?
For creative eccentricity and art world kudos: Bjork. For post-r’n’b trendiness and general difficult-to-dance-to-ness: The Weeknd.
Got a lesser-known fact?
She’s a Catholic school girl (aren’t they all!) who attended St Edward’s School in Cheltenham, and her excellent education can clearly be heard in the delicate way she enunciates the word “Motherfucker” on lead track “Two Weeks”.
How big's she going to get?
She’s all sorted for underground cred but from the sounds of the new record she’s not looking to go mainstream; Jessie J can sleep easy.
LP1 by FKA twigs is out on 11 August (Young Turks)
