Warning: The following article contains major potential spoilers for the rest of Game of Thrones' seventh season.

The odds of Jaime Lannister surviving Sunday's Game of Thrones battle seemed grim as the episode faded out, but has the Kingslayer actually been slain?

That's the question on every Game of Thrones fan's mind after Jaime's last ditch attempt to finish off Daenerys, only to be caught in the crosshairs of Drogon's fire breath.

While Jaime was knocked out of the way of the flame by someone (Bronn? Rickon? Err, sorry, Dickon?), he plunged into a nearby river with his heavy armour sinking him deeper and deeper.

The question of if Jaime will be rescued was left ambiguous in 'The Spoils of War', but we might actually have a clue thanks to an Entertainment Weekly interview with episode director Matt Shakman.

In describing the grandiosity of the battle, Matt Shakman covertly dropped a potential hint: "I wanted to tell the story of what it would be like to be on the ground in the middle of a dragon attack, to see what it's like – to be in a napalm attack, to see the birth of a new weapon.

"And all of a sudden the Lannister army — which is a Roman army in a way, an army of order and precision, who can handle pretty much any obstacle — they encounter something they cannot handle and realise that war has changed forever. Jaime, especially, is a great soldier and realises this is going to be a new era."

Notice that last bit, which intimates that Jaime now realises that he'll have to change his strategy for the next battle with Dany's dragons. Usually dead men don't strategise much about future battles, so does that mean he's still alive?!

Later in the interview, Shakman is a bit cagier as he refers to Jaime being saved "from the dragon fire at least", we think his earlier comments were perhaps unintentionally telling.

Of course, Jaime also has plot armour working in his favour, so we expect him to make it back to shore alive somehow (if a bit worse for wear)...

Game of Thrones continues with 'Eastwatch' on Sunday (13 August) on HBO in the US, and in the early hours on Monday (14vAugust) on Sky Atlantic in the UK. Watch a trailer below:
