Warning: This article contains spoilers for Game of Thrones season 7 episode 5 'Eastwatch'.

Game of Thrones delivered a huge bombshell in this week's episode 'Eastwatch' – although it was revealed in such a throwaway manner that some fans may have missed it.

Samwell Tarly (John Bradley-West) and Gilly (Hannah Murray) were at the Citadel when Gilly made a discovery that could have a large say in who ends up on the Iron Throne.

"[High Septon] Maynard says here that he issued an annulment for a Prince Rhaegar and remarried him to someone else at the same time in a secret ceremony in Dorne," Gilly shares, reading one of the many books there. "Is that a common thing in the south, or is..."

Of course, Sam interrupts her before she finishes, and we don't get the satisfaction of seeing the pair realising what this means.

So what does this actually mean?

To cut a long, long story short, R+L=J revolves around Jon Snow's real parentage.

Jon's parents are none other than Daenarys's brother Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark, Ned's sister – revealed in one of Bran's past visions.

However, despite this season six revelation, it was unclear whether or not Jon truly had a real claim to the Iron Throne, given that he might still be a bastard.

What Gilly reads out is that Rhaegar married Lyanna. And that means that Jon is indeed a legitimate Targaryen heir to the Seven Kingdoms, which is huge.
