Teaser Trailer For The Fall Reminds Us It's Actually Pretty Good

The welcome return of Gillian Anderson and Jamie Dornan

There was much to enjoy about BBC crime drama The Fall, although fans of the show could be forgiven for wondering where exactly it could go next after – spoiler alert – serial killer Paul Spector was shot and taken into police custody at the end of series two.

The cat and mouse game between Jamie Doran's Spector and Gillian Anderson's brilliantly aloof detective Stella Gibson was the central tension of the show and now, well, now it's over - unless Spector mounts an unlikely prison break so he can resume his strangling campaign against the women of Belfast.

This new teaser trailer gives very little away, cutting between Spector in a hospital bed (will he survive? We wonder...) and Gibson insisting she wants him to live so "he can spend the rest of his life in prison".

There is a small shot of Spector young daughter, now old enough to surf the internet alone and reading about her deeply disturbed father – a plotline that could add to the psychological intrigue of the show or go a bit 'Dana in Homeland' depending on what happens.

Either way, it is (probably) a welcome return for the closest British TV has came to producing a show on a par with The Killing and the Nordic noir wave that has raised the bar for crime dramas in recent years.

We'll find out when the shows airs on 29 September.
