A fishing village in north Cornwall is now home to the best place to eat in the UK, according to The Good Food Guide's latest list of best restaurants.

The restaurant, named Restaurant Nathan Outlaw, in Port Isaac, has been crowned Britain's top restaurant in the 2018 line-up, bumping Cumbria's L'Enclume into second place after five years in the number one spot.

For the second year running, Outlaw's two Michelin star seafood eatery, which he founded in 2007, achieved a perfect score of ten. It was awarded the coveted title for being "the whole package," with its relaxed dining room, attentive service and a menu focused on fresh Cornish fish dishes.

"Nathan Outlaw's food is characterised by the absolute freshness of ingredients and a clear sense of purpose," said the guide's editor Elizabeth Carter. "He has done an enormous amount to educate and encourage the public appetite for fish, driven by his supply of impeccably fine ingredients, and a special talent for creating unique and thrilling fish dishes."

Outlaw said being awarded the accolade was "phenomenal".

"I'd say the award has come due to the hard work and dedication of our team who have now been working together for a decade," he added. "It just goes to show that if you stay true to yourself, get your head down, look after your customers and use the very best ingredients available to you, you'll make it to the top."

The Good Food Guide, published by the supermarket Waitrose, lists over 1,000 entries based on anonymous inspections and feedback from readers, which helps it to champion the lesser known foodie destinations outside of London.

These include places like Stark in Broadstairs, Kent, run by chef Ben Crittenden. His tiny 12-seater restaurant only has a galley kitchen, but diners can enjoy a six-course tasting menu there.

While four of the restaurants listed in the top 10 are located in the capital, Bristol also fared well in the awards this year. It has the highest number of new entries of any city outside of London, with Peter Sanchez-Iglesias from Casamia, ranked in tenth spot, named Chef of the Year.
