When it comes to holidays, things can get expensive pretty quickly. Once you've added up the flights, hotel, transfers and endless books for the airplane that you ignore in favour of Candy Crush, you're faced with quite a hefty sum - which is why it would be useful to know when in the year the best time to book cheap flights is.

And thanks to Opodo, we now know exactly that, after the flight comparison website calculated the best day and month to save the most money on flights. They did so by comparing the average flight price of return flights from the UK to all destinations purchased between November 2015 and October 2016.

The answers? The cheapest day to book your holiday is a Saturday or Sunday, as their data shows:

"Booking on Saturday saves the average passenger 3.95% (5.78% domestic, 3.43% short haul, 2.63% long haul) while Sunday is 3.37% cheaper (6.68% domestic, 2.58% short haul, 0.84% long haul)."

As for the best month to book cheap flights? Well it's no secret that booking last minute flights in high season summer is going to be quite pricey, which is why September and October mark the best time to bag yourself a deal.

Opodo explain:

"Book in October to save 10.6% (13.89% domestic, 13.29% short haul, 4.62% long haul) or in September to save 10.18% (9.07% domestic, 13.67% short haul, 7.81% long haul) off the yearly average price."

So, we'll be seeing you at the checkout desk.
