Being hit in the face with a ball is a rite of passage that comes to us all at some point in our lives.

If you're lucky it's during a game with just a handful of close friends nearby. If you're unlucky it's during a PE lesson in front of a bigger audience, including some you have a crush on.

And if you're really, really unlucky it's during a football match in a ground full of 87,000 people, aired live on television and then posted on the internet and shared around the world.

Which is exactly the fate that befell photographer Ashley Ward at a game between Auburn Tigers and Louisiana State in Alabama this week.

Attempting to catch the opening kick of the game – a feat that would have earned her a small but significant moment of glory – the ball instead slipped through her fingers and into her unguarded human face, sending her flat on the ground.

As always when these things happen, there was a moment when everyone suspended their laughter just in case Ashley had, y'know, been killed by a football.

But thankfully she was back on her feet and laughing in no time: the perfect response to any and every ball-in-the-face incident.

"I didn't feel it at all," she told ESPNU afterwards.

"I really think that the embarrassment was probably setting in and I don't remember feeling anything."

Next time it happens to you, remember to style it out like Ashley Ward.
