It's rare a story when professional footballers and money warms your heart, but here you go. Rio Ferdinand and his Manchester-based restaurant have pledged £500,000 of toys and gifts to a children's charity.

The former England and Manchester United legend shared the good news on his Facebook page on Thursday. In his post, which received over 2,500 likes within two hours of publication, Ferdinand said he hoped the donation made on behalf of himself and his Italian restaurant Rosso "will put a smile on locals kids' faces this Christmas!"

The contribution was made to Cash For Kids, a charity which supports disabled and disadvantaged children in Greater Manchester. In an interview with local radio station, Key 103, the footballer turned pundit said he wanted to help less fortunate families.

"Christmas is a time when families want to get each other presents and there are obviously people that are less fortunate than we are so we want to try and help them and donate £500,000 worth of toys," Ferdinand said.

While the charity has been promoting its "Mission Christmas" campaign in recent days, representatives from Cash For Kids have said they've been left "in shock" by the kind gesture.

Ferdinand's heroic gestures don't end there, either. He has also donated 11,500 sleeping bags to homeless people, the Manchester Evening News reports. What a guy.
