Japan's worrying sex problem has become so bad that only 8.4 children are born for every 1,000 inhabitants and their population is set to shrink from 127m to 87m by 2060. And the problem appears to be getting worse, in 2015 49 percent said they had not had sex in the past month, up 5 five percent over numbers from 2013.

The issue has gone a step further and now the younger generation are even giving up dating and instead marrying friends. New findings from a government survey released that 69 per cent of men and 59 per cent of women in Japan don't have a romantic partner.

This follows research from June 2015 which found nearly 40% of single Japanese people are not interested in finding a partner. The reasons they gave were many and complex but answers that ranked highly were that they cared more about personal interests, wanted to prioritise work and most of all, they found relationships bothersome.

According to Japan Times, "To deal with the low birthrate, the government has vowed to provide support for all stages of individuals lives, ranging from marriage, pregnancy and delivery to child rearing, the white paper said."

It will become even harder for them to counter the low-birth rate if people aren't even meeting in the first place.
