Everyone knows a smug couple convinced their party of two exists on a plain of happiness singletons can only dream of.
But what about open relationships? If you've watched a little Mad Men (Or Hollyoaks, let's be honest) you might think threesomes and open relationships are just bad storylines destined to end in disaster and depression.
The research from the University of Michigan analysed the relationships of more than 2,100 people, asking them to rate their relationships in terms of satisfaction, commitment, trust, jealousy and passionate love.
Interestingly, the results showed no noticeable difference in the group's satisfaction or passionate love but of those surveyed in open relationships showed higher levels of trust and less jealousy - perhaps not totally surprising given you need the right doses of both to be comfortable with your partner sleeping with other people.
The study states, "We found few differences in relationship functioning between individuals engaged in monogamy and those in CNM (consensually nonmonogamous) relationships".
Proof you really can have it all.
