Finding the right glasses always seems to fall under one of two extremes, depending on your face and disposition: either everything seems to work just fine, and picking the right pair is a matter of details, or nothing seems to fit, and the world just isn't made for your great big Lego block of a head.

Luckily, there are a few simple guidelines for identifying the general shape of your face and the types of frames that are likely to work, so you can narrow down the pool in some simple steps. The perfect, perfect pair for you might still be that mythical unicorn out there, but at least this way, you can get a jump start on the hunt.

One word of warning, though: no amount of shape-matching will help if the literal dimensions of the glasses don't fit your face. So make sure an expert helps you match the width of the frames to your temple, and so on, before you put down your prescription.
