While Americans and the president-elect were drinking in the sweet shred of 3 Doors Down at the inaugural concert yesterday evening, news broke that Mexican drug kingpin Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman will be extradited to the United States.

Guzman rose to fame after he (allegedly) twice broke out of the Mexican federal prisons in which he was held. His second escape—reportedly on a dirt bike rigged for an underground track after crawling through a bathroom trapdoor—ballooned his legend north of the border, although cartel expert Don Winslow disputed that account in Esquire last year. That piece also illustrated his role in greatly exacerbating the American heroin epidemic.

While Guzman faced numerous charges in Mexico, he was also wanted by the United States government, which also believes itself better able to house the drug lord securely. It remains unclear where in the U.S. Guzman will be tried, and on what charges.
