George Clooney has accused Donald Trump of being part of the Hollywood elite that he continues to lambast, adding that he receives a substantial amount of money from his Screen Actors Guild pension scheme.

The actor also pointed out that Trump's chief strategist Steve Bannon is "a failed film writer and director". He told Canal Plus: "He [Trump] collects $120,000 a year in his Screen Actors Guild pension fund. He is a Hollywood elitist."

The US president released a disclosure in 2015 which stated he had claimed $110,228 from the body of which he is a member, although it's not certain whether it was an annual fee.

Trump has also provided cameos in Home Alone 2, and The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, whileThe Apprentice and Celebrity Apprentice - which he fronted prior to his presidency - has earned him $213.6m over 11 years, according to his financial disclosure.

Clooney continued: "Steve Bannon is a failed film writer and director.

"That's the truth, that's what he's done. He wrote a Shakespearean rap musical about the LA riots that he couldn't get made. He made a lot of money off of Seinfeld. He's elitist Hollywood, I mean, that's the reality."

Seinfeld writer Peter Mehlman recently told The Guardian that it was "galling" that Bannon still receives royalties from the hit NBC sitcom, saying: "[That he made] all this money off a show that's associated with Jewish humor - that's pretty galling.

"He showed himself to be a raging antisemite."

Meanwhile, Clooney had defended Meryl Streep after Trump branded her "over-rated" on Twitter after she had criticised him during her Golden Globe acceptance speech last month.

"Aren't you supposed to be running the country?" Clooney said to People magazine. "I didn't vote for him, I don't support him, I don't think he's the right choice.

"At this moment in our lives we have to hope that he doesn't destroy everything. The reality is you have to hope he will do a decent job because if the United States fails, really terrible things happen, so you have to hope that he can."

Let's hope Trump's too busy running the country to respond to this.
