Star Wars might have passed out of its creator George Lucas's hands, but his opinion still holds a lot of weight.

So we couldn't help but wonder if he had seen Rian Johnson's new instalment in the series, The Last Jedi.

Well, he has, and he thought it was "beautifully made".

His representative Connie Wethington relayed his thoughts on Episode 8 to the The Hollywood Reporter.

Johnson also confirmed to Digital Spy that Lucas had seen the movie ahead of its release this week.

"I spoke briefly to him," he said. "He had some kind words – he was very gracious."

Star Wars passed out of Lucas's control after Disney bought Lucasfilm in 2012.

Star Mark Hamill recently lamented that Disney has not been taking the Star Wars creator's guidance while working on the new sequel trilogy.

"What I wish is that [Disney, who bought the franchise from Lucasfilm] had been more accepting of his guidance and advice," he said. "Because he had an outline for 7, 8 and 9. And it is vastly different to what they have done."

The Last Jedi follows directly on from Star Wars: The Force Awakens. While Rey (Daisy Ridley) seeks training from Luke Skywalker (Hamill), her Resistance allies find themselves in a desperate fight for survival against the First Order.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is out on 14 December in the UK and 15 December in the US.
